This is a car that got sick of being trapped on lakeshore during the Chicago blizzard of 2011. They crashed through some trees and a concrete barrier before just stopping at the rail almost going into the lake. There were no survivors. We had access to the shore via ABC world news.

There is an interesting new show on Sci-fi channel called faceoff. It is a competition of special effects makeup. They show the process from sketching concepts through sculpting casting and applying all the prosthetics and makeup. It is pretty visually astounding even if you aren't into special effects and synthetics. One downside is it is structured like a trashy reality series. Another positive attribute of the show is that it reminds you of the movie faceoff because they have the same name. Wow what a great movie! Remember when they take that guy's face off? That was the best.

This is a sketch form life of a little statue made of metal. I was talking to Robert Lovelett asking him how to get better at drawing. He said practice. Specifically from life an hour a day. This didn't nearly take me an hour but it is a start. While this is that impressive I am pretty happy with the fact I didn't really stylize the shape or make it look like a cartoon I stuck to trying to copy the shape and shading of the actual statue all the way through. Hopefully with time I'll get better at this. Plus even if I don't get really good at drawing still lifes doing these exercises will probably add a lot to the depth and shape and shading of the more cartoony stuff I draw.

Et Tu Bear?

So the other night I went out and saw Et Eu Bear?. They were pretty great. They consisted of a steel guitar and a stand up bass. They are going to play Erica Gerbasi's wedding in Austin Texas where they are from. Erica is my roommates sister we all went to the show together. I wasnt feeling great so I just had a glass of water.

What's Opera, Doc?

While I was in Sturgis at the end of the summer my apartment was robbed. This was right before I moved from Humboldt Park to Lincoln Square, in Chicago. Anyhow, I lost a lot of music from my computer. Just a little bit ago I built a new computer and found some of my music on an old harddrive, but I've been trying to get music from other people when I can. The other night I went over to Tyler Lang's place to grab some new music from him to fill out my new collection, which is now looking pretty good. On the harddive he lent me there was also a very large looney tunes collection. I am very excited about it. Much more so than I was about new music. The first folder I opened had "What's Opera Doc" that you probably all remember that or you would if you saw it. It is really weird. There is a obese horse and Bugs Bunny dies at the end.

Spaghetti

Hi. I had an idea to take folk tales and integrate spaghetti in creepy ways. The first idea was Rapunzel. Her hair was spaghetti and her family would sit down to dinner each night and serve out plates of meat balls in marinara sauce as her hair would grow through all the plates and they would eat it. They had to do this every evening or her hair/spaghetti would overwhelm them all. It was a miserable prison of an existence. This picture above I drew on the airplane coming back from Africa back last March. It is the tale of the tortoise and the hare I think you can guess what happens next.

I thought it would be neat to do a bunch of drawings where you replaced color with patterns. Slowly through looking at many of these drawing you would learn to see the patterns as the colors they represented and enjoy them as such. A better way to acclimate yourself to this system would be to draw things that are known for being certain colors like yellow suns and red fire hydrants. This blob doesn't really train your eye to see this pattern as green very much I more picked its shape to illustrate shading within the patterns.

I have definitely been drawing every day for a few months now. I just haven't gotten in the habit of putting it up here. Plus sometimes it isn't very good. Starting now I'm going to try to put more of my daily sketches up. I drew a few people on the train. If I draw them in my perforated windwill skectchbook I will tear it out and give it to them just for fun even if it isn't much of a likeness of them. This one I drew in a non perforated book. This guy was really tall and quite a character. He was wearing those Verbatim Five Fingers shoes with a suit. I wasn't in a place to judge though I was wearing my cowboy boots.
I was on the train because I am doing some freelance animation down at 15 letters. Tons of fun. Things are going really well.

I was thinking about how interesting it was that different lines and symbols could be used within comics and cartoons to represent things that it would otherwise be difficult to convey. Some examples are, A circular bubble to show what someone is saying. A cloud-like thought bubble to show what they are thinking. Wavy lines over something to show it has an odor. Straight lines behind something to show it is going fast. etc. I was wondering how hard it would be and over what period of time it would take to implant new comic features into society. I have some ideas for a few this is just one, the aural bubble showing what people are hearing. The actual design of it needs works but I like the idea at its core.

Hey. It's nice when it rains because it is like a shower for the city. Imagine trying to get the amount of washing done in the city that the rain accomplishes it would be really expensive. It is like putting Chicago in a giant dishwasher.
It would be great if we created more ways to take advantage of the amazing power of the rain and all that free water. Also it would be cool if the city was designed to change the functionality of the public areas when it rained. The streets could be canals and the parks could be ponds and the building tops could be swimming pools.

This week we are making some promotional videos for Nike. They have created a character named Mr Black who travels to rivaling highschools and get the kids excited about a big upcoming football game and about Nike gear. Mr Black is played by a improv actor whos real name i forget. I believe it is Pat. He is tons of fun to work with. Not only do I get over a weeks worth of work out of this deal I also get new shoes. They gave me the opportunity to go pick out any footwear from Niketown, downtown Chicago. Usually I would not wear Nike, but it's free and an I get to have ridiculous shoes I would have otherwise never invested in.

Confusing Phone

I had a dream that I was still painting. I had a big job the following day but no one would tell me the address the night before. I had a few too many drinks and woke up late and hungover. Still without the address I had to follow someone else to the jobsite. They were driving too fast. I was groggy and out of it. I hit a cop. I blacked out.
When I woke up I had no idea how much time had passed. On top of that I did not have my cellphone. Being concerned about if I had missed the job I needed to make some calls. The new phone I found in my pocket was overly complicated. It unfolded with many screens and keyboards and even a little retractable mouse. It kind of looked like a stings of paperdolls when I unfolded all of the pieces.

These are my last few days not living at PopcornIsland. I have even begun to move my stuff in. It will be exciting to get a lot more done here and have a cleaner and more organized environment to live and work.
Also it is exciting and scary because the rent is much more than I am used to, but i think that will be a good thing for now because it will push me to work much harder than I have had to in the past.

Dobsonfly Larva

So I was camping and floating down a river in Southern Missouri. I was having a great time picking up rocks from the shallow river and looking at them.
Lots had deep holes in them and little bugs crawling around on them. It was a little creepy. One larger rock I found had a large hole and a big bug head sticking out of it. It had big scary pincers. The head was so big and interesting looking I thought I would get the entire bug out of the hole to see what the rest looked like. There was a thin strip of bark floating in the river I began to use it to try to pry the bug out. It clamped down on the bark and I could feel quite a bit of resistance as I pulled back. That was scary as well. The bark was too flimsy so I went into the woods and found a more ridged stick and got the bug out. I set it on top of my kayak. It again was very scary. I drew this picture from memory and later googled random things until I found out it was most likely a dobsonfly larva.

This is a concept drawing for a short animation idea I had where a giant rock would roll through the countryside slowly breaking away pieces until it was a film reel. Then film would start playing on it and so on.

Here is a picture I took on my new canon XTi. It is the first real camera I have owned. I am pretty excited about it. The last few posts of drawings were actually pictures taken on the XTi of the drawings. I used a tripod and a work light. It was a kind of makeshift animation stand. Probably scanning would have been as easy. I got some modeling of color from the lighting and I think it made the pictures look more gritty and real.
As far as the actual picture goes here is Josh Tallo shooting a film with a canon 5D. There is a good deal of lighting and smoke effects going on. Pretty sweet stuff. You can click on it for the larger version as always. To see the film he was shooting go visit "Beyond the Still" at PopcornIsland

Hi! I am in Northern Michigan for a few days for thanksgiving. I drew this picture of Cody Fettig. If you have met him you can probably see a little resemblance. We hungout and play through twisted metal on the playstation2. It was nice to catch up. I kind of can't wait for more twisted metal games to come out. They always seem a little half assed though.

Also we saw Fantastic Mr. Fox. I felt it was flawless. It reminded me of the Redwall books. It might be my life's goal to turn the redwall series into stopmotion features. I hope someone else doesn't beat me to it and make them shitty.

Ok here is the newest version. I added a more cartoony looking comet. I took out the nebula clouds in the background until i can get them looking better. I am planning on reworking the camera and comet paths. Right now they are the same as the first two tests only i parented the camera's aim to the comet. Before, the camera's direction was based on the path itself. Now I am working out on paper what exactly i want the camera to do during this shot so I can make a really purposeful path.
Looking back the last test may have been more exciting and may have looked a little better. But i think that certain elements are getting closer to what I am shooting for and it will come together in the end!
