I thought it would be neat to do a bunch of drawings where you replaced color with patterns. Slowly through looking at many of these drawing you would learn to see the patterns as the colors they represented and enjoy them as such. A better way to acclimate yourself to this system would be to draw things that are known for being certain colors like yellow suns and red fire hydrants. This blob doesn't really train your eye to see this pattern as green very much I more picked its shape to illustrate shading within the patterns.

Guy on Train: sketch

I have definitely been drawing every day for a few months now. I just haven't gotten in the habit of putting it up here. Plus sometimes it isn't very good. Starting now I'm going to try to put more of my daily sketches up. I drew a few people on the train. If I draw them in my perforated windwill skectchbook I will tear it out and give it to them just for fun even if it isn't much of a likeness of them. This one I drew in a non perforated book. This guy was really tall and quite a character. He was wearing those Verbatim Five Fingers shoes with a suit. I wasn't in a place to judge though I was wearing my cowboy boots.
I was on the train because I am doing some freelance animation down at 15 letters. Tons of fun. Things are going really well.

I was thinking about how interesting it was that different lines and symbols could be used within comics and cartoons to represent things that it would otherwise be difficult to convey. Some examples are, A circular bubble to show what someone is saying. A cloud-like thought bubble to show what they are thinking. Wavy lines over something to show it has an odor. Straight lines behind something to show it is going fast. etc. I was wondering how hard it would be and over what period of time it would take to implant new comic features into society. I have some ideas for a few this is just one, the aural bubble showing what people are hearing. The actual design of it needs works but I like the idea at its core.

Rainy Days, Rainy Days

Hey. It's nice when it rains because it is like a shower for the city. Imagine trying to get the amount of washing done in the city that the rain accomplishes it would be really expensive. It is like putting Chicago in a giant dishwasher.
It would be great if we created more ways to take advantage of the amazing power of the rain and all that free water. Also it would be cool if the city was designed to change the functionality of the public areas when it rained. The streets could be canals and the parks could be ponds and the building tops could be swimming pools.

Mister Black

This week we are making some promotional videos for Nike. They have created a character named Mr Black who travels to rivaling highschools and get the kids excited about a big upcoming football game and about Nike gear. Mr Black is played by a improv actor whos real name i forget. I believe it is Pat. He is tons of fun to work with. Not only do I get over a weeks worth of work out of this deal I also get new shoes. They gave me the opportunity to go pick out any footwear from Niketown, downtown Chicago. Usually I would not wear Nike, but it's free and an I get to have ridiculous shoes I would have otherwise never invested in.

Confusing Phone

I had a dream that I was still painting. I had a big job the following day but no one would tell me the address the night before. I had a few too many drinks and woke up late and hungover. Still without the address I had to follow someone else to the jobsite. They were driving too fast. I was groggy and out of it. I hit a cop. I blacked out.
When I woke up I had no idea how much time had passed. On top of that I did not have my cellphone. Being concerned about if I had missed the job I needed to make some calls. The new phone I found in my pocket was overly complicated. It unfolded with many screens and keyboards and even a little retractable mouse. It kind of looked like a stings of paperdolls when I unfolded all of the pieces.

Moving Days Moving Days

These are my last few days not living at PopcornIsland. I have even begun to move my stuff in. It will be exciting to get a lot more done here and have a cleaner and more organized environment to live and work.
Also it is exciting and scary because the rent is much more than I am used to, but i think that will be a good thing for now because it will push me to work much harder than I have had to in the past.

Dobsonfly Larva

So I was camping and floating down a river in Southern Missouri. I was having a great time picking up rocks from the shallow river and looking at them.
Lots had deep holes in them and little bugs crawling around on them. It was a little creepy. One larger rock I found had a large hole and a big bug head sticking out of it. It had big scary pincers. The head was so big and interesting looking I thought I would get the entire bug out of the hole to see what the rest looked like. There was a thin strip of bark floating in the river I began to use it to try to pry the bug out. It clamped down on the bark and I could feel quite a bit of resistance as I pulled back. That was scary as well. The bark was too flimsy so I went into the woods and found a more ridged stick and got the bug out. I set it on top of my kayak. It again was very scary. I drew this picture from memory and later googled random things until I found out it was most likely a dobsonfly larva.
